We've created a quick prevention check to help you review your policies and procedures to prevent child sexual abuse. It's a temperature check of your current initiatives and standards at your organization. See where you stand on hiring practices, monitoring behavior, training guidelines, and more.

Does your organization have a screening and hiring process for all staff and volunteers?

Question 1 *

Your screening and hiring process includes:

  • A written application and a signed Statement of Suitability
  • Personal interview(s) and reference checks
  • Child abuse registry check
  • Initial and periodic criminal background checks, CORI and SORI (MA)
  • National criminal and sexual offense background checks (other states)

Do you have a system in place, so all staff and volunteers know when, how, and to whom to report suspicions or allegations of child abuse?

Question 2 *

All staff and volunteers:

  • Are aware of their legal/organizational obligations to report suspected abuse immediately
  • Are trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of abuse
  • Know how (and to whom) to report concerns, suspicions, allegations, and disclosures of abuse
  • Know how to respond to a child who discloses abuse

Does your organization have a safe environment policy that is available to all staff and volunteers?

Question 3 *

Your safe environment policy covers physical and procedural standards to:

  • Maximize the visibility of kids in your care
  • Control and monitor access to your site
  • Ensure supervision of all kids and communication between adults
  • Establish safe transportation guidelines
  • Ensure safe technology use

Do you have a Code of Conduct with clear expectations for interactions between adults and children?

Question 4 *

Your Code of Conduct clearly outlines expectations and includes:

  • Your mission statement and programs values (Code of Ethics)
  • Appropriate, inappropriate, and harmful behaviors
  • Reporting obligations, procedures, and process
  • Regular monitoring of adult behaviors/interactions with children
  • A signed Statement of Receipt and Agreement

Is training provided to all staff, and information provided to all families about your organization's child sexual abuse prevention plan?

Question 5 *

Training for staff and information provided to parents:

  • Is offered at least annually
  • Includes how to recognize, respond, and report child abuse
  • Covers how to identify and respond to concerning adult behaviors
  • Reviews your organizations policies and procedures to keep kids safe
